What's With Joe?

I've been working my way through the Ginga manga series for the first time recently, and I feel like I missed something.

I finished up GDW and started GDW:O and suddenly Joe is around? I know we got confirmation he's alive at the end of GDW but Weed never actually met him, did he? Now he's just part of Ouu and I feel like I missed something here

There's only 427 chapters of GDW, right? Or is there some spin off I missed? Or is this one of those 'implied' situations where I should just assume everything went well at the family reunion..? Are we just never going to talk about how he survived those monkeys or what

Weed meeting Joe and them fighting against hybrid bears together is a whole arc in GDW, taking place in volumes 51-60. Unfortunately it hasn't been translated into English yet, but there's an ongoing translation project for it over at the translation forum.
