GDR is fine, I guess. I don't have particularly strong feelings about it. I'm in love with the idea of Riki starting his life out as a runt and a mama's boy with no demonstrated interest in hunting or fighting but eventually becoming one of the greatest, most renowned soldiers in the entire series; there's definitely the potential for great character exploration there. At least for me, the biggest issue is that the pacing is too fast so his development feels less believable. In my opinion, it could have benefited strongly from a second volume. As a few others have said here, we don't see anything that occurs following Shiro's death and I think that would have helped sell the point a lot better, not to mention allowing more breathing room so the plot doesn't feel so breakneck.

As-is, it's an enjoyable quick read, but pretty standard Takahashi fare.

It was cute! It’s so cool how Riki turned from a needy child to an independent and intelligent adult. And what’s also cool is that we get to see Shiro, a dog that isn’t talked about much, in here!
