List of scenes cut from the original dubs of GNG
I got the idea to do this after the cut version of GNG was briefly brought up in the TLW topic: a comprehensive list of every scene cut from the Nordic dub versions of GNG. If I've missed any please point it out!
First, some general things:
-Since the episodes were all mashed together onto 90 minute VHS tapes, all the commercial break eyecatches and most of the openings and endings were cut. Each VHS only featured an opening and an ending for the very first and very last episode, respectively, except for the fourth and final one which had no ending at all.
-All title cards were also cut. Every scene that took place between the opening and title card was also cut. This includes the scene in episode 5 where Gin receives his scars.
-Most of the scenes appear to have been cut for excessive violence, though towards the end it seems they were cutting out stuff just so they could fit the whole series onto four VHS tapes.
-The dub generally does nothing to address the abrupt cuts and characters disappearing for no reason, and instead carries on with the original script (or a mangled version of it, rather) like nothing was wrong. 4kids this ain't.
-All timestamps are based on the original, uncut episodes.

Shot of bloodied Riki and talk about his death (18:07-18:29)
Everything from 20:32 on is cut
*this is a rare case of the dub addressing a missing scene - the narrator actually says that the Harpoon Bear pushed a tree onto the dogs... and "killed them all". Bit of an exaggeration there, I'd say.

So since part of it may be explained by tape-friendliness - if I may so - what about tv broadcasts, if they happened?

There are rumors about tv broadcasts, but no evidence such thing ever happened.
Even if it did happen, I'm sure it would've been the same thing as the tapes.

Well done with poiting it all out Digsu!
I can still see the cut jumps in the dib without even watching, as I've seen it so often.

For those who are curious about the dub, here is the first part of the Finnish dub (containing episodes 1-4):

I think it's well worth to watch just to hear that "excellent" dubbing.

I've watched through the entirety of the Finnish dub and am always bewildered by the quality checks on this. What company dubbed this? Was this the norm for Finnish dubs back in the day? I must know.Doragon wrote: ↑Mon Dec 03, 2018 8:18 am For those who are curious about the dub, here is the first part of the Finnish dub (containing episodes 1-4):

Re: List of scenes cut from the original dubs of GNG
This was dubbed by Golden Voice.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Voice_Oy
Funnily enough, this isn't even the worst Finnish dub of an anime or cartoon I know. Just check Agapio Racing Team (their most famous work is dubbing the first half of Digimon Adventure 01).
And sadly, dubs with this quality were a norm back in 80's and 90's. Back then many anime series were dubbed and published on VHS tapes like this, Ginga just happened to be a one that gained popularity among the kids of that era (the story touched the heart of many kids, including me :'D).

This scene is from episode 7.
And there is missing scene where Moss and others see skeletons on the crater.

Re: List of scenes cut from the original dubs of GNG
Wow... I'm so glad I saw them all on Youtube in their full glory or otherwise I would've gotten completely confused! I can imagine an awful lot of people must gotten extremely confused if they watched it with all those important scenes cut out, especially with the very last episode. Might as well not aired them at all, the episodes were probably only five minutes long at the most!
I did a Ginga dog horoscope and according my calculations, I am most like Gin! Am I lucky?
I took one of those 'Which character are you?' tests, one which happened to be Ginga related and it said I would
be most like Tesshin! I feel quite honoured!

Re: List of scenes cut from the original dubs of GNG
I was introduced to GNG through the first Norwegian dub VHS which me and my brother got from a finnish guy who brought several other VHS's (which were in Finnish though) If you wonder why Norwegian, because i lived in Norway when i was a kid and returned to Finland about 2 years ago.
Anyway my mom later bought me the Steelbook edition of the Finnish dub, and that's when i saw it fully and it made me a super fan. I didn't know anything about the Uncut version, until i was 11 i think for some reason. So when me and my cousin who loves Ginga too, she mentioned stuff like how Benizakura died which was cut in the dub and only mentioned in Moss's thoughts, and also mentioned that one of the Kai Brothers die (she didn't say which one) and somehow didn't say anything about the uncut version, so i didn't believe any of it.
Needless to say probably when i watched it ultimately at the age of 11-12 i was caught off guard of every shocking scene that were cut, especially with Akatora and that leg feeding scene. Jesus.

Re: List of scenes cut from the original dubs of GNG
I've watched the Nordic cut "movies" on Youtube and noticed that they did leave in a considerable amount of gore, just cutting out the "excessive" or "plot-useless" gore. For example in episode 13, it shows Kurojaki stabbing Akame with the sickle, but not Kurojaki losing hs eye. 50/50 I'd say.
