Differences in manga and anime

I decided to make this topic, because there are misunderstandings due to the fact that not everyone have seen both manga and anime. In GDW's case, anime version is adapted from the manga, and there are many scene and character changes. As manga is the original version, it seems good idea to spread the knowledge about it.

Because majority have only seen anime version, I'll list changes in a form of anime episodes. Due to the lenght of the text, I'll put some in spoiler tags.

Feel free to ask, commet and correct!

Episode 1
- in manga, Sakura leaves Ohu when Lucy, Terry's widow, gets jealous of Sakura's happiness and tricks her to believe that Gin has been deadly injured.
- in manga, only Weed and GB are present when Sakura dies. It is said to happen before summer starts.
- in manga, Weed and GB visit Smith in his human house, but he doesn't go with them.
- in manga, Weed doesn't do the battouga at the guard dog.

Episode 2
- in manga, only Weed and GB travel together.
- in manga, when helping Mel, Mel's mother is also present. When Blue is dealt with, Mel stays with his mother.

Episode 3
- in manga, Weed and GB arrive to Ohu together. It is said to be end of September.
- in manga, Ken and Kagetora are enemies at first.
- in manga, Tokimune is shot by Hidetoshi.
- in manga, dogs learn about Kaibutsu only after Tokimune dies and Ken leads everyone to Gajou.
- in manga, Weed is treated from shotgun wounds by Hidetoshi and Daisuke.
- in manga, Ken and Kagetora meet Smith and Mel at the rock where Riki once gathered his army.

Episode 4
- in manga, snow starts to fall when Weed and others follows Jerome to the ravine. The snowstorm continues for the rest of the Kaibutsu arc.
- in manga, North's head is tossed out of Gajou.
- in manga, Ken and Kagetora follow Weed inside Gajou.
- in manga, Smith survives from the rockslide, but dies soon after he speaks his last words. His body is left inside Gajou.

Episode 5
- in manga, the helicopter doesn't appear.
- in manga, Daisuke and Hidetoshi arrive to witness battle against Kaibutsu.
- in manga, it is Ken's attack that makes Kaibutsu fall into the ravine.

Episode 6

SPOILER

- in manga, Kaibutsu also falls into the river. The log that pierces Kaibutsu is below a waterfall.
- in manga, Jerome and Weed lose consciousness in the icy water, when they are found by others.
- in manga, the helicopter does not appear.
- in manga, Weed and Jerome stay unconsciouss. It is freezing, so GB and other form a huddle to warm them up.
- in manga, Gin, Akame and John encounter Nero in a forest during a snowstorm. They are looking for Sakura. Hook is not present.
- in manga, Sasuke is the one that informs Gin, Akame and John about Sakura's death.
- in manga, Nero meets Hougen in wilderness. Nero asks Hougen to help him to cut off Gin's legs and urinate on his face. Hougen's minions then cut off Nero's legs from wrists, and Hougen urinates in his face.
- in manga, Rocket, Missile and Jet are not introduced yet.
- in manga, we don't see how Reika met Gin, John and Akame. We are introduced to Reika when she delivers dog food package to trio's hideout. When she leaves, Hougen's minons spot her.
- in manga, Gin, Akame and John rest in a shrine.
- in manga, on her way home, Reika is attacked by Hougen's minions. He is rescued by Hiro.
- in manga, Hougen's minion named Gon discovers Gin, Akame and John's hideout, but is knocked unconsciouss by Akame and taken as prisoner. Later, he lies that he has wife and kids, and Gin lets him go.
- in manga, Reika tells Hiro about Gin's situation.
- in manga, Hiro watches Gin's battle, then joins the battle and helps Akame to escape.

Episode 7
- in manga, Rocket doesn't infiltrate in Weed's pack.
- in manga, Jerome doesn't teach Weed how to fight.
- in manga, it's Missile who kidnaps Weed. And this happens fast; Rocket, Missile and Jet spot Weed's pack, Missile rushes in and snatches Weed.

Episode 8
- in manga, Sasuke distracts guard dogs while Hook brings snow to drink for Gin, John and Hiro.
- in manga, Rocket is able to lift Weed and GB off the tree branch, and doesn't fall himself.

Episode 9
- in manga, Sasuke is with Hook watching John's battle.
- in manga, John doesn't lose his fang.
- in manga, Hougen bites John's hanging bowl and starts to pull it out of John's body. John bites his own bowl off, and it slams into Hougen's face.
- in manga, only Weed, Hook and Sasuke are present when John dies. In the fake victory scene they create for John, Hook plays Akame, and Sasuke howls to mark the victory of Ohu's army.
- in manga, Weed's pack arrive after John is dead, and as Sasuke recognizes Rocket, Hook tells him that his brothers are dead.

Episode 10
- in manga, John's body is left in the snow, where wandering, blind Ben finds it. He doesn't recongnize John, but still carries him to his former owner to bury.
- in manga, Hiro awakes in a shed, guarded by Reika. Weed and other arrive, and they mourn their losses, howling into a snowstorm.
- in manga, Reika and Hook don't leave to Ohu.
- in manga, it is winter when Ken and Kagetora meet Kurotora. Jouji is with them. Ben and Cross are not present.
- in manga, Reika comes to comfort injured Teru.

Episode 11
- no big differences.

Episode 12
- no big differences.

Episode 13
- in manga, the dogs that Mel meets are not Genba's minions.
- in manga, Ben and Cross arrive alone to Ohu.
- in manga, meeting with Tesshin is hostile. Tesshin has left Ohu, because Murder S lied to him that Ohu dogs killed his father, Kurojaki. Weed and Jerome fight against Tesshin and Kogas in undergroung hideout. During this, the reason for Sakura's leaving from Ohu and the meaning of Smith's last words is revealed. In the end, Tesshin stays in Koga.
- in manga, Genba sents three messengers to tell Kurotora and others to leave Gajou. They refuse, and fight the messengers off.

Episode 14

SPOILER

- in manga, Rocket meeting Kamakiri and his pack is different. Kamakiri kills Rocket's friend Rikiya, and Rocket escapes and goes to gather his remaining friends.
- in manga, Tesshin doesn't try to free Gin. Instead, it is Mole, Oliver's son, who digs a tunnel into the shed.
- in manga, as Rocket has not arrived by dawn, Weed and the pack leave to search for him.
- in manga, Stone doesn't appear here. Jerome smells iron, and Weed connects the smell to guns, as he's been shot before, and warns everyone to hide behind the trees.
- in manga, when Jerome distracts humans while the shooting, humans release a german sephard named Ron to attack Jerome. Jerome has gunshot wounds, but he still defeats Ron, who starts to change his opinion about wild dogs. It's on this fight that Jerome loses his ear. Jerome escapes into the forest, but collapses due the bullets on is leg.
- in manga, Weed and co. search for Rocket. Kamakiri sees them, and mistakenly thinks that GB is the leader. Stone appears, attacks GB, and runs away. Weed and others follow. They are led into dead end surrounded by high rocks. Kamakiri appears. Weed bows to Kamakiri, telling that they're not looking for trouble. Kamakiri kicks Weed, and Teru attacks, but is wounded by Kamakiri. Hiro confronts Kamakiri. Battle begins.
- in mnaga, Ron escapes humans and finds injured Jerome, who asks Ron to go and help Weed.
- in manga, Rocket arrives and joins the battle.
- in manga, humans arrive into battle side and are about to shoot, but Ron arrives and stands in the way. Humans shoot a warning shot to scare Ron away, but he stays. Battling dogs notice humans, and Kamakiri and Weed lead their packs away. Ron rescues Teru, and starts to lead Weed and co. to where he left Jerome. Meanwhile Jerome is found by Kogas.

Episode 15
- in manga, Mole delivers Gin's message to Weed.
- in manga, Weed manages to cut off tree branch on his first try.
- in manga, Hougen and Kamakiri don't fight. Instead, Murder S fights for Hougen and Stone for Kamakiri. Murder S kills Stone with his metal back legs.
- in manga, Tesshin removes the bullets from Jerome's leg.

Episode 16

SPOILER

- in manga, Gin escapes before Hougen leaves for Ohu, and is nursed to health by humans. After that, he journeys to Ohu, gathering dogs while going.
- in manga, Murder S brings Hougen a body of dead akita that looks like Gin, and lies that he had to kill Gin in order to capture him. Murder S stays behind with his pack while Hougen and Kamakiri leave for Ohu.
- in manga, Tesshin has 7 subordinates.
- in manga, Akame follow Genba's minions to town and rescues a female that they are about to kidnap. Shigure arrives to the scene with Kisaragi's sons and they fight off Genba's minions.
- in manga, Lector and Thunder don't appear.
- in manga, GB, Sasuke and Mole are sent to check if Gin is alive. Mole discovers that Gin is gone. They hear from Murder S's minions about Gin's death.
- in manga, when Hougen arrives to Ohu, he throws dead akita's corpse into the ravine, saying that he doesn't need dead Gin anymore. Akame retrieves it, and discovers that it is not Gin.
- in manga, two spy dogs are spying Ohu army. They are spotted and captured. After questioning them, Weed lets them go.
- in manga, Jerome follows spy dogs and kills them. He is then exiled by Weed.

Episode 17

SPOILER

- in manga, GB, Mole and Sasuke arrive empty handed, and tell Weed that Gin is dead. Weed goes mad with sorrow, until dogs that followed Jerome return.
- in manga, Mel meets Jerome on his way to deliver message to Weed.
- in manga, Izou and his brothers prevent Hougen's minions from kidnapping females.
- in manga, Weed sneaks away in the night and challenges Murder S for killing his father. He meets Mel in the way, and sends him back to his sleeping pack. Jerome appears, and aides Weed when he attacks.
- in manga, Weed defeats Murder S. Murder S's army is defeated by Weed's pack. In the end, Murder S falls off from steep bank, and gets hit by a car. After the victory howl, Mel tells Weed that Gin might no be dead (Mel met Moss on the way to Weed, and Moss wanted to see Gin's corpse. He discovers from its scent that it is not Gin).
- in manga, Jerome now remains in Weed's pack.
- in manga, Akame attacks Genba's pack with Kisaragi's sons only.
- in manga, Weed takes with him Rocket, Mel, Tesshin and Koga dogs.
- in manga, Daisuke comes to help Weed and other escape by wind caused by a helicopter.
- in manga, Kamakiri leaves immediately to follow Weed and his pack.
- in manga, Tesshin attacks Genba alone while he is returning with his pack to Gajou.
- in manga, Tesshin and Genba are caught in an avalance.

Episode 18
- in manga, Genba wets himself and drinks his own urine, and Hougen kills him.

Episode 19
- in manga, Hougen doesn't attack Kamakiri.
- in manga, Ohu army's hideout is in a cave.
- in manga, there isn't John's fang to mourn.
- in manga, GB doesn't bump into Hougen's minions.

Episode 20
- in manga, Weed howls his challenge to Hougen into the morning sky.
- in manga, Hougen howls his defiance, splits his pack into five, and leaves to search Ohu's army.
- in manga, Tesshin and Rocket spy for Hougen's army.
- in manga Weed takes with him Jerome, Ron, Rocket, Akame, Tesshin, Ken, Kagetora, Jouji, Shigure, Nobutora, Harutora, Kisaragi's six sons (wounded Izou stays behind), and Kouga dogs. Whole unit, including Weed, consists 25 dogs.

Episode 21

- in manga, Toubee meets Kyoushirou's subordinates, and leads them back to Ohu's army. One young dog, Takeshi, slips and falls into the river. Toubee dives in to fave him. They are found by Kamakiri, pack. For Takeshi's sake, Toubee lies that he took him as hostage, and they are brought led back to Gajou.
- in manga, Kamakiri's pack encounter a pet dog named Mukku, which Weed rescues. Mukku has come to tell that humans are going to destroy Gajou with explosives.
- in manga, Hougen tests Kyoushirou's loyality by making his minions slam his head against a rock.
- in manga, Kyoushirou and Toubee make plan to help Takeshi to escape.
- in manga, Hougen sents Kamakiri after Toubee and Takeshi, as he suspects Toubee.
- in manga, Toubee fights Kamakiri's minions to help Takeshi escape.
- in manga, Kyoushirou stops Kamakiri's minions that got past Toubee, and stays to fight them. Takeshi can't watch, so he joins the fight.
- in manga, Kyoushirou and Takeshi are rescued by Weed, Jerome, Tesshin, Jouji, Ken and Akame.
- in manga, Weed, Jerome, Tesshin, Jouji, Ken, Akame, Kyoushirou and Takeshi help Toubee to die standing.

Episode 22

SPOILER

- in manga, Weed wants to warn Hougen about humans plan to destroy Gajou. He, Jerome, Tesshin, Jouji/George, Ken, Akame, Kyoushirou and Takeshi meet Buruge, and tell him the message. Buruge leaves, and abandones Hougen.
- in manga, Gin has arrived to Ohu, and Mukku joins his pack.
- in manga, messenger arrives to Gajou and tells Buruge's betrayal and Weed's message. Hougen orders Kaito and Batto to search for Buruge.
- in manga, Buruge, Kaito and Batto eventually encounter Gin. They are convinced by Gin's speech.
- in manga, humans decent into Gajou from helicopter, chase dogs away by tear gas and set the explosives.
- In manga, Weed, Jerome and Tesshin go to Gajou to see if Hougen has believed Weed. They encounter Kamakiri, but run onward.
- in manga, Weed sees one human fall from ontop of Gajou, and runs to save him from Hougen. Humans leave, and Hougen retreats to Gajou, but secretly escapes. Weed, Jerome and Tesshin are hold back by Hougen's minions. As humans leave and explosion time neares, one of Hougen's minions confessed that he saw Hougen escape, and whole pack runs away in fear. Weed, Jerome and Tesshin amost get caught in explosion.
- in manga, Ohu army saw the explosion, and is on their way to the site, when Kamakiri attacks. Hiro defeats Kamakiri. Gin appears with his pack and Buruge, Kaito and Batto.

Episodes 23-26 (there are so many differences in these, so I pile them together)

- in manga, Weed, Jerome and Tesshin confront Hougen after the explosion. Weed uses battouga, and is unable to move for a while. While Jerome distracts Hougen's remainin minions, Tesshin creeps toward injured Hougen and is about to attack, when Murder S appears. Murder S slices Tesshin's side with his metallic legs, and Tesshin's bowls fall from the wound. With his last strenght, Tesshin leaps for Murder S, but revived Hougen saves Murder S, leaving Tesshin lying on the snow. Hougen flees when he hears Ohu army's nearing howl. Jerome tries to push Hougen into the ravine, but falls in himself. Weed charges in and takes Hougen into the ravine with him.
- in manga, Gin holds Tesshin while Akame pushes his bowls back into his body. Moss stays to guard Tesshin. Gin jumps into the ravine to search for Weed.
- in manga, Jerome confronts Hougen in the ravine, but Hougen throws him into the river. Weed arrives, and instead of fighting Hougen, he jumps into the river to save Jerome. Both are swept into the icy cavern.
- in manga, Jerome doesn't talk about Ohu's spring. Weed is already over one year old.
- in manga, Weed and Jerome are found just outside of the icy cavern. Weed recovers immediately, but Jerome is taken to Daisuke to heal.
- in manga, Hougen evades all the searching dogs by hiding in the river.
- in manga, Hougen meets Jouji, Cross, Ben and Reika. Reika howls for help, but because of the snowstorm, only Weed, who was closest to them, hears her. Reika takes Hougen into the river.
- in manga, Jouji jumps into the river to save Reika. Reika dives and tries to attack Hougen from underwater, but Hougen predicts her movement and kicks air out of her lungs and her body to the bottom of the river.
- in manga, Hougen climbs up the ravine above a dam, but after many dogs trying to stop him from escaping, Weed is able to drag Hougen back into the ravine and over the dam.
- in manga, Weed jumps down from the dam and hits with battouga to Hougen's head.
- in manga, Akame and Gin dive in to save Weed. Gin bring Weed into the surface, and Weed rests on his back. Weed feels his father's warmth for the first time.
- in manga, Hougen uses Mel as a hostage, and is able to reach dry land. All of Ohu army finally arrive to the scene, and Hougen is surrounded. Hougen challenges Weed for the final battle. Weed asks that Gin lets no-one to interrupt the fight, and goes to face Hougen.
- in manga, when Weed has defeated Hougen, Sakura's spirit appears, and Weed realizes that it was Sakura that helped him.
- in manga, Gin was testing Weed's character by threatening to kill Hougen. Gin pronounces Weed to be the new leader of the Ohu army.
- Weed spares Hougen, and as Hougen is walking away, a human (who was watching the whole wight from aside) who has grudge against Hougen steps in, and shoots attacking Hougen multiple times in the head, killing him.

They aren't, they are very much allies when they are introduced in the series.

Really? Oh well, I just remember it differently. I guess this gives me an excuse to rewatch GDW;)

There maybe alot of differences between the anime and manga but I do think some scenes in the manga are mirrored in the anime.

When Hougen attacks all the dogs coming at him at the edge of the cliff and basically throws them all off, I think that is reflected in the scene in the anime where he arrives back at Gajou and starts attacking and killing random dogs which results in the death of Ryu.

Sniper's metal legs are given to Kite as they are revealed when he fights Tesshin, who indeed fights Sniper at Gajou.

This one is a bit farfetched and could be just coincidence but when the reason Yukimura indeed ends up dying is that he is impaled by a tree branch by Shogun and in the anime, John mainly dies as he is impaled by a tree branch by Hougen. And of course, both Yukimura and John both pull the branches out of themselves!
